چکیده
Class C fly ash is a coal combustion product normally produced from lignite or subbituminous coal obtained as a result of the power generation process. In recent years, efforts were taken to incorporate self-cementing fly ash into full-depth reclaimed (FDR) asphalt pavements to improve the structural capacity of asphalt pavement base layers. In this study, an existing asphalt pavement in County Trunk Highway (CTH) “JK” in Waukesha County, Wisconsin was pulverized in place and mixed with fly ash and water to function as a base course. To evaluate the contribution of fly ash to the structural performance of the pavement, nondestructive deflection tests were performed using a KUAB 2M falling weight deflectometer (FWD) on the outer wheel path four days, one year, and two years after construction. The modulus of the fly ash stabilized FDR base course increased by 49% one year after construction, and by 83% two years after construction. The structural capacity of the fly ash stabilized FDR base course in CTH “JK” also increased significantly as it ages, due to the pozzolanic and cementitious reactions. The results of this study indicate that the FDR mixtures with self-cementing fly ash can provide an economical method of recycling flexible pavements and reduce the need for expensive new granular base courses for road reconstruction.

Pavement maintenance and rehabilitation have been neglected in Nigeria for a very long time and has resulted to maintenance backlog. Design agencies in Nigeria still use California Bearing Ratio (CBR), even though the method is outdated. An introduction of Dynamic Cone Penetration Test (DCPT) was pertinent, even though the method is relatively old in some developed countries, it has not gain mu...

Reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) is one of the waste materials that highway agencies promote to use in new construction or rehabilitation of highways pavement. Since the use of RAP can affect the resilient modulus and other structural properties of flexible pavement layers, this paper aims to employ two different artificial neural network (ANN) models for modeling and evaluating the effects of ...

The asphalt paving industries are faced with two major problems. These two important challenges are generated with an increase in demand for environmentally friendly paving mixtures and the problem of rapidly rising raw materials. Recycling of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) is a critical necessity to save precious aggregates and reduce the use of costly bitumen. Warm Mix Asphalt (WMA) technol...

Weak bonding between layers of pavement leads to damages on the composite pavement. Bonding plays an important role in the durability and maintenance of composite pavement layers. The present study evaluates the factors effective in bond strength of the interface between concrete and asphalt pavements. The factors considered for this purpose include steel slag percentage in the concrete pavemen...
